THSADA Spotlight: Bernie del Hierro

I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas.  I went to Austin High School and received my undergraduate degree from The University of Texas-El Paso.  After graduation I served three years in the US Army.  After my discharge I worked for Pennwalt Corp. as a drug salesman for 15 years.  When the company sold, I went into teaching bilingual education with Socorro ISD.  After receiving my Masters in Education from Stephen F. Austin in Nacadoches, I became the Athletic Director, a position I held for 18 years until my retirement on December of 2013.  I am  married and I have two sons and a daughter.  I have just completed my 43rd year of officiating both football and basketball.

I have really enjoyed being a member of the THSADA through my years as an AD.  The conferences were always very informative and enjoyable.  Meeting and sharing ideas with fellow AD’s from throughout the state was always a great experience.  One of the highlights of my career was receiving recognition from THSADA last summer along with other retirees.  In retirement, one of the things I enjoy the most is receiving the THSADA Newsletter.  It keeps me informed with what is happening throughout Texas and the nation in the athletic world.  Reading about what is happening on the legal side is always very interesting.  Hearing about coaching and AD changes is always interesting.  Since I still officiate, I love reading about rule changes before we get them from the officials association.  Even though I am retired, being an AD never leaves your blood and THSADA and my fellow AD’s in El Paso keep it flowing.  I want to thank THSADA for all that they do for school districts and especially student athletes throughout the year.
