THSADA Spotlight: Shawn Pratt

As a graduate of Plano Senior High School and a member of their 1986 State Championship football team, I  have been involved in UIL athletics most of my life.  After high school, I began my college studies at Texas  Tech University and then completed both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Texas A&M University –  Commerce.

In 1992, I headed straight to McKinney ISD to begin my student teaching at McKinney High School  under  Head Coach Ron Poe.  During that time, I quickly realized that McKinney was where I wanted to teach and  coach.  Coach Poe offered me a coaching job in 1993, and I have been here ever since.

In 2000, McKinney opened its second high school, and I was fortunate enough to be named the Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator.  Then, in December 2008, I accepted an invitation from former Superintendent Tom Crowe to move into the role of MISD Director of Athletics.

I am blessed with an awesome family that includes my wife Deanne who teaches AP Calculus and is the AP testing coordinator at McKinney North High School.  My oldest son, Collin, will be a Junior Football player at McKinney North.  My youngest son, Cade, will be a 7th grader at Cockrill Middle School and is just beginning his secondary athletic career.  My daughter, Whitley, will be a 5th grader at Minshew Elementary and enjoys participating in both basketball and volleyball.

McKinney ISD is a large school district of approximately 25,000 students with two 5A high schools and one 6A high school, which are fed by the District’s five middle schools.  In McKinney ISD we take pride in our excellent coaches who not only do an outstanding job of developing better athletes, but they also develop better people.  One in every three secondary students in MISD participates in Athletics, and during the past two years, we have enjoyed a great deal of success across our programs including:  3 team sports qualifying for their respective State tournaments and 8 individual sport State Champions.  More than 770 student athletes have earned Academic All-American awards while over 200 have also earned Academic All-State recognition.  In addition, more than 150 McKinney ISD student athletes have received scholarships to participate at the collegiate level.

In my short six years as Director of Athletics and as a member of THSADA, it has been very exciting to witness the many positive changes our organization has gone through.  With the addition of the Executive Director position and the reorganization of the State Board, the THSADA is destined to continue growing and evolving into the finest organization of its kind.

McKinney ISD is a great place to live and work, and that is why I am beginning my 22nd year in this District.  I would like to wish everyone in our great state a productive 20124-15 school year.  Keep fighting the good fight – and remember that we do make a difference in the daily lives of our student athletes.
